Red Shiso
Perilla frutescens var. crispa, or shiso (/ˈʃiːsoʊ/,[2] from the Japanese シソ), belongs to the genus Perilla, in the mint family, Lamiaceae. Shiso is a perennial plant that may be cultivated as an annual in temperate climates. The plant occurs in purple-leaved (“red”) and green-leaved (“green”) forms. There are also frilly ruffled-leaved forms (chirimen-jiso) and forms that are red only on the underside (katamen-jiso). Different parts of the plant have a number of culinary uses in East Asian and Southeast Asian cuisine.
